【摘要】新教华文教会学校的编译活动作为西学东渐序幕的重要组成部分,引领了中国近代翻译事业高潮,在客观上成就了中国第一批具备较系统西学知识的知识分子,以及一个具有良好外文修养的编译人才群体。其编译活动在带来西方的教育制度、引进先进的机械设备、革新出版理念的同时,也是跨文化传播的最初实践者,第一次系统搭起了中西文化交流的桥梁,并通过创造性的出版活动直接催生了中国近代出版业。另外,西书汉译不仅丰富了中国的文化体系,也给19世纪先进的中国人提供“放眼看世界”的资料来源,使其受到西方近代思想的洗礼,逐渐接受基督教文明、近代科学观念以及民主制度理念,从而开始用新的思维方式思考探索救国之路;汉文西译为西方人打开了一个一窥中华帝国真颜的窗口,某种程度上重构西方人眼中的中国形象,客观上为弘扬中华文化作出了重大贡献。

【外文摘要】This paper aims to study the Chinese mission schools established byProtestants before the Westernization Movement and its role in the career oftranslating and editing in the late Qing Dynasty. Chinese modern publishingindustry budded and developed with the capitalist’s cultural invasion in 19thcentury. Through establishing mission schools, setting up the publishingagencies, founding the press, translating and editing books, the westernmissionaries in China tried to expand western culture whose core wasChristianity.As an important part of the movement of“West Learning Spreading to theEast”, these activities of translating and editing in the Chinese mission schoolsby Protestants before the Westernization Movement, led the Chinese moderntranslation project, trained the first group of intellects who mastered thewestern knowledge systemically and talents of translating and editing whowere well up in foreign languages in China. When brought in westerneducational system, introduced into advanced machinery and equipment ofprinting, reformed the publishing philosophy, these schools firstly carried outcross-cultural communication, set up a bridge for the intercourse of Chineseand western culture. Besides, its creationary publishing caused Chinesemodern publishing industry.On the other hand, the Chinese translation of western books enrichedChina’s knowledge, offered the western knowledge source to advancedChinese people in 19thcentury who opened their eyes and looked at the world.Understanding western modern ideology, they gradually accepted theChristianism, science and democracy. Thereby, they began to think about theway of saving the nation with a new ideation. What’s more, the version ofwestern language about Chinese classics opened a window for occidentalpeople to see the real Chinese Empire, restructured image about Chinese in occidental people’s eyes in certain ways, contributed to carrying Chineseculture forward objectively.
