洋务运动时期英语课程研究:以圣约翰大学和京师同文馆为例

【摘要】布朗的教学大纲设计理论,从析学生需求,制定教学目标和目的,检测目标落实情况,编写或修订教材,实施教学活动,全面评估大纲设计过程种的各个环节六个方面对当时的英语课程设置进行理论层面的分析。本文主要研究以下问题:1.研究洋务运动时期教会学校和官立学校的英语课程分别有什么特点?2.力图用先进的课程理论从多方面来分析官办学校和教会学校办学思想,教学方法等,并研究其对目前的学校英语课程设置有何启迪意义?由于对外交流的需要,英语教学在洋务运动这一特殊的历史时期十分广泛,本文针对当时的英语教育,引入国外的课程理念,用西方的课程理论来分析当时的英语教育。分别选取了官办学堂和教会学堂中最典型的例子,京师同文馆和圣约翰大学进行分析。力图以一种新的视角来回顾当时这一特殊的历史时期,为当时的英语课程设置找到理论支持,意在为当今的英语课程设置寻求借鉴之处。本文的研究涉及历史学、语言学和教育学等相关学术领域。采用文献分析法,依照布朗的课程设计模式对洋务运动时期教会学校和官办学堂的英语课程设置进行分析,尤其是选取典型案例,京师同文馆和圣约翰大学的英语课程进行分析。对于当前的英语课程与教学,我们应该在课程设置、教学方法和措施以及英语师资培养等方面有所借鉴。尤其是在教学与教学方法方面,应当注重实践和口语,并且注意激发学生的上进心。通过本文的分析,笔者希望对目前的学校英语教学改革有启迪意义。

【外文摘要】As a carrier of western culture, English which was introduced in school education of China in later Qing Dynasty boomed during the Westernization Movement. English education basically composed of two aspects: one is English teaching with the purpose of teaching students the language, and the other is English education which aimed at enlightening students with western knowledge by the means of English. This thesis emphasizes on the first aspect of English education—English education with the focus on curriculum of English teaching. The main points of the thesis include:1. Researching the characteristics of mission schools and government schools2. Trying to apply advanced curriculum theory to analyzing the educational ideology, methodology, etc. of mission schools and government schools and studying its impact on school English education at present.This thesis focuses on the particular historical period—Westernization Movement when English education was widely applied due to the need of communication with western countries. This thesis introduces foreign curriculum theory to analyze English education of the day. Western curriculum theory includes needs analysis, goals and objectives, testing, materials, teaching and evaluation. According to which and with Saint John’s University and Imperial Translators’ College as typical examples the English teaching of Westernization Movement is analyzed. The author was trying to retrospect this particular historical period from a brand-new perspective to find theoretical support of English education of the day and to enclitic English education of today.This thesis refers to history, linguistics, pedagogy and other relative academic fields. It applies literature analytic method and curriculum models to analyze English education at government schools and mission schools in Westernization Movement, especially with Imperial Translator’s College and Saint John’s University as the case study. English education of today could learn a lesson from curriculum, teaching methods and methodology and teachers’training, etc. of the day. Especially, in the aspects of teaching and didactics, practice including oral practice should be emphasized and students’desire to advance should be encouraged. The final purpose of the author is to do some contribution through the analysis of English education of the day to today’s innovation and reform of English education at schools.
